US shipping company Crowley Maritime is, reportedly, putting together a containership newbuilding programme for ships to be deployed in the international and domestic US trades it serves. The privately owned US group is interested in vessels up to 1,400 teu that incorporate innovative design features. However, Crowley wants to wait until market conditions have stabilised before going ahead with investments potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Yard prices could also weaken further, the company predicts. Jacksonville-headquartered Crowley has already completed designs for the ships it wants to build and had been about to sign contracts last June for vessels deployed in services to and from the US. But as the container trades deteriorated, “we decided to hold back,” said chairman and chief executive Tom Crowley. If it goes ahead, Crowley will be ordering its first boxship newbuildings since the mid-1980s.
