Prison Guard Salary

A prison guard, known formally as a corrections facility officer or a detentions officer, is an important member of the law enforcement community. These individuals are involved in maintaining order and security in confinement facilities at the local, state and federal level. They may be employed by governmental agencies, or hired by for-profit organizations. Income levels for prison guards can vary widely depending on education and experience and the location and type of facility. Prison guards work in prisons and jails, often in stressful environments where they are heavily outnumbered by prisoners. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), correctional officers have one of the highest rates of non-fatal injuries on the job. The median salary of prison guards in 2009 was $42,610. About 25 percent of prison guards made less than $31,210.
