Homicide (Latin: homicidium, Latin: homo human being + Latin: caedere to cut, kill) is the act of a human killing another human.[1] Murder, for example, is a type of homicide. It can also describe a person who has committed such an act, though this use is rare in modern English. Homicide is not always a punishable act under criminal law, and is different from murder from a formal legal point of view. Homicide detectives can make salaries of $40,000 or considerably higher per year. However, these individuals must pay their dues as patrol officers for six months to three years before becoming eligible for promotions that can eventually lead to becoming a detective. Homicide detectives in Washington, D.C., are among the highest paid in the country, ranking first in a list of top-paid detectives. In a field that is predicted to grow by 10 percent due to population growth until the year 2018, homicide detectives in the nation's capital have a secure job.
